Steps for accommodation providers

Accommodation providers have an obligation make sure they have policies and procedures in place to help prevent discrimination and sexual harassment.

Victoria's Equal Opportunity Act covers those who rent, offer or provide temporary or permanent accommodation such as business premises, a house, flat, hotel or motel room, boarding house or hostel, caravan, mobile home or camping site.

It is against the law for property owners, landlords, managers or their representatives (such as real estate agents), to discriminate against tenants, applicants or prospective buyers. You may be vicariously liable for the actions and decisions made by staff or representatives.

Equal opportunity education, policies and practices can help prevent costly, time-consuming and disruptive discrimination and harassment issues and disputes. But even the best accommodation providers face complaints of discrimination or sexual harassment.
