Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission's Submission to the Victorian Government's Charter of Human Rights Consultation
The Commission's submission to the Victorian Government's Charter of Human Rights joins 1,800 others from individuals and organisations.
The Commission applauds the Victorian Government's initiative in raising this issue for public consultation, and its apparent willingness to take a leadership role on Human Rights. At the same time the Commission has urged the Government to consider a broader Charter than that proposed in its Expression of Intent, in particular that:
- the Charter should include economic, social, cultural and environmental rights
- Indigenous rights and children's rights should be explicitly recognised
- the Charter should contain an individual cause of action that can be utilised if a person believes their rights have been infringed
